Roblox Shirt Template on a Patterned Preview: Can a Thin Line Disappear?
Yes, alignment with a patterned background can change a thin line's measured contrast. In our 64-pixel shirt-front previews, the same one-pixel red source stroke gave 42 high-contrast pixels on one phase of a 4-pixel checkerboard and zero after the light and dark squares were swapped. The saved Shirt PNG did not change between those two previews. This is a pixel test, not a claim about human vision or Roblox's avatar renderer.
Here “high contrast” means Euclidean RGB distance of at least 128 from the background-only pixel in the same position.
The same line, with the squares reversed
We drew centered 45° red lines one and two source pixels wide on separate transparent 150 × 150 PNGs. We imported each into this editor at 45% Image size, placed it on the Shirt FRONT, and downloaded a 585 × 559 Shirt PNG. From each saved file, we cropped the same 128 × 128 FRONT square identified by Roblox Creator Hub. Chrome Canvas smoothed each crop down to 64 × 64. Only the background changed: white, charcoal, or alternating white and charcoal squares of four or eight preview pixels. A and B reverse which color occupies each square.
| Preview background | 1 px source: high-contrast pixels | 2 px source: high-contrast pixels |
|---|---|---|
| White | 42 | 124 |
| Charcoal | 0 | 58 |
| 4 px checker A | 42 | 107 |
| 4 px checker B | 0 | 75 |
| 8 px checker A | 42 | 114 |
| 8 px checker B | 0 | 68 |
At 4-pixel checker A, the one-pixel diagonal landed on light squares in this exact alignment: 42 pixels crossed the 128-distance rule. Reversing the squares put the same line on dark squares: zero crossed it. The eight-pixel checks gave the same 42-to-zero result here. That extreme result depends on this diagonal and grid alignment; rotating or moving either one could change it. The two-pixel line was less absolute: 107 versus 75 on the four-pixel checker, a difference of 32 pixels. On eight-pixel checks it was 114 versus 68, a difference of 46.
The lower 64-distance threshold also matters. For the one-pixel line, every background and phase had 42 changed pixels at that threshold. A zero in the table therefore means none reached our stronger cutoff; it does not mean the line's pixels vanished from the preview. A count also cannot tell us whether a person recognizes the motif at native size.
Compare the saved previews at native size
These twelve PNGs were generated from the two actual editor downloads. Each displays at 64 × 64 pixels below. Compare phase A and B for the same line width before zooming. The white and charcoal previews are controls for the two square colors.

A repeatable check for your own design
- Export once. Save the actual Shirt PNG so every background comparison uses identical artwork.
- Crop the intended area. Use the same FRONT region for every trial; Roblox labels it as a 128 × 128 square.
- Set a realistic preview size. We used 64 × 64 for a controlled comparison, not as a Roblox rendering specification.
- Move the pattern as well as changing its colors. A line can land mainly on light or dark checks; reversing the phase exposed that sensitivity here.
- Revise and export again. If a delicate feature depends on one favorable background phase, try a wider stroke or a higher-contrast hue, then inspect the new saved file at the same preview size. Follow Roblox's Studio test step before upload.
Scope: This experiment used synthetic red diagonals, one placement, two line widths, two checker sizes, Chrome Canvas smoothing, and a single preview size. It did not test human recognition, other patterns, or a Roblox Studio avatar. The RGB-distance cutoff is our analysis rule, not an official clothing standard.
