How to Keep a Roblox Shirt Template Transparent
Leave the areas you want clear unpainted, then use Download PNG. Open the saved file over a checkerboard and confirm those areas show through. A white background stays white even when the filename ends in .png; erase unwanted white pixels before exporting.
This page is for Classic Shirt artwork. Roblox accepts PNG or JPG for classic clothing; choose PNG when your design needs transparent pixels. Roblox's garment fit and panel alignment still need a Studio test.
What our PNG export test found
We tested the site's Classic Shirt editor in headless Chrome on September 29, 2026. We used its actual Download PNG button, reopened each resulting blob as an image, and sampled pixels. Each saved file was a 585 × 559 PNG. The diagrams below illustrate the three tested pixel states; the numbers are the decoded PNG values.
Center pixel alpha: 0. The checkerboard shows through.
Center pixel: 255, 0, 0, 128 in RGBA. Background remains partly visible.
Center pixel: 255, 255, 255, 255. White conceals the checkerboard.
The placement guide was visible in the editor during the empty export. Its corner pixel had alpha 214, while the matching artwork canvas and downloaded PNG corner both had alpha 0. This confirms that the guide overlay did not enter that export. A PNG can store alpha, but the extension alone does not make painted pixels transparent. The W3C PNG specification describes alpha as optional.
Make a transparent shirt in this editor
- Select Classic Shirt first. It uses the torso and arm layout. The site's size guide explains why the Classic T-Shirt canvas is different.
- Add artwork only where you want color. Untouched areas start clear. Imported PNGs can contain clear or semi-transparent pixels; imported images with an opaque background bring that background with them. Check the image before placing it.
- Use Eraser on unwanted marks. If the unwanted white comes from a placed image, remove or edit that source image so its background is transparent, then import it again. The editor's Eraser acts on drawn artwork, while a currently placed image remains a separate layer until changed or cleared.
- Hide guides for a visual check, then click Download PNG. The checkerboard behind the canvas helps reveal clear areas. Hiding guides makes artwork easier to inspect, although the guides are excluded from the downloaded artwork in either state.
- Open the saved PNG in an editor with a checkerboard. Inspect a deliberately empty corner and the edge of a semi-transparent design. Save the file you inspected for your Studio test; a screenshot of the editor is a different image.
A quick alpha check: 0 means fully clear, 128 means roughly half opacity, and 255 means fully opaque for an 8-bit alpha channel. White is a color, not an alpha value. A white pixel with alpha 255 will cover whatever is behind it.
Diagnose the saved file

Before uploading to Roblox
Roblox distinguishes Classic T-Shirts, Shirts, and Pants. A Shirt wraps the torso and arms, so a correct alpha channel does not prove the garment is aligned. Roblox's classic clothing guide says to test the image in Studio before uploading. For a Shirt, add a Shirt object to a test rig and assign the image to ShirtTemplate. Rotate the rig and look for unexpected clear regions, solid blocks, and seam breaks. If you meant a chest-only graphic, use the T-Shirt route and its ShirtGraphic object instead.
